Australia’s leading support organisation for eosinophilic diseases, ausEE Inc., is hosting its 11th National EOS Awareness Week from 6-12 August 2023.

The event aims to raise awareness about eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs), including eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE). EoE, characterised by inflammation in the oesophagus, affects 1 in 1,000-2,000 people and can cause symptoms like swallowing difficulties and food impaction.

ausEE seeks to educate and support individuals impacted by EGIDs, emphasising the importance of early diagnosis and ongoing management.

Symptoms and Impact of EoE

Symptoms of EoE can include difficulty swallowing, food regurgitation, nausea, vomiting, reflux, stomach or chest pain, and food impaction in the oesophagus.

EGIDs require ongoing monitoring and management, significantly affecting the quality of life. Delayed diagnosis is common, with endoscopy and biopsies being the definitive diagnostic method.

Untreated EoE can lead to food impactions, causing permanent scarring and narrowing of the oesophagus. In support of NEOSW, Australian and New Zealand landmarks are illuminating in pink and purple, representing eosinophils.

Raising Awareness and Funding for Research

Last year, over 40 landmarks, buildings, and bridges were proudly illuminated in pink to show their support for individuals with eosinophilic diseases. Building on this success, ausEE invites everyone to join this year's pink illumination, raising awareness and solidarity for this important cause.

During National EOS Awareness Week, people with EGIDs, including EoE, come together to share their experiences and foster community understanding of eosinophilic diseases. ausEE is amplifying these stories through the #MyEoE campaign, featuring personal insights shared on social media and their website.

There are different ways to support National EOS Awareness Week, like using social media badges and banners or sharing NEOSW posters - all available from the ausEE's website.

#Top8Challenge

On Monday, 8 August, as part of NEOSW, ausEE invites everyone to participate in the #Top8Challenge. This annual fundraising campaign supports Australian medical research focused on eosinophilic diseases.

The challenge involves abstaining from the top 8 common allergenic foods, including milk, wheat, egg, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish, raising awareness and funds for this important cause.
