Over 80% of our adult community report atopic health issues such as asthma, eczema and or rhinitis alongside their eosinophilic diagnosis, which is further supported by increasing data showing a high percentage of personal or family history of atopic problems associated with Eosinophilic diseases.

EOS Network acknowledges the importance of Allergy and Immunology healthcare professionals recognising the symptoms of EoE and other EGID's when their patients present with additional gastroenterology problems and vice versa; the need for Gastroenterologists to be aware of the high rate of atopic problems in those diagnosed with eosinophilic gastroenterology problems.

To help increase awareness of the symptoms, support and resources available for both patients and healthcare providers, we exhibited at the joint World Allergy Organisation and British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Conference in Edinburgh from 25th to 27th April 2022 where an estimated 700 healthcare professionals attended.

My friend Amanda has been tirelessly voluntarily running the EOS charity whilst caring for and raising her 2 children, that have both been diagnosed with Eosinophilic diseases. While talking to my friend on zoom with her EOS banner in the background, she told me she was preparing to go to Edinburgh to raise awareness at the World Allergy Conference and how much she had to organise to make it happen.

She looked her normal in-control self as she chatted to me, telling me how she was waiting for the printers to deliver posters/t-shirts/table cloths all designed by her to take to the Conference and our normal chats discussing our kids and families had turned to prices of couriers and accommodation in Edinburgh!

My friend needed help, I asked Amanda if she’d like me to come to the conference with her and she gratefully said yes!

Luckily the sun was shining on us as we lugged the suitcase full of Amanda’s leaflets and six-foot posters to display at the conference through the streets of Edinburgh. A friend's daughter at Edinburgh university came and met us and helped us set up the stand with youth on her side.

We transformed a trestle table into an EOS information centre, it looked fantastic, and we were set up and all ready for the conference to begin!

I was not expecting what happened next …

The Conference lasted for three very long days. We were up at 6 am, at the stand at 8.30 am and on our feet until 6 pm and what happened in between was just wonderful. For the first 2 days, a gorgeous lady called Helen, a mum whose son suffers from Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE) and has been a charity member for 3 years, donated her time to come and help. She told me how incredible Amanda had been and how much the EOS Network had helped her with information about her son’s illness, so she was delighted to be able to help Amanda now.

Over 3 days, we spoke to nearly 300 healthcare professionals. Each person left our stand clutching a handful of lovingly created leaflets explaining food obstruction, action plans and information for A&E departments, and most importantly, all the symptoms to look out for diagnosing EoE.

Approximately 50 healthcare professionals signed up to the fast-growing EOS network, with many putting their names on the healthcare professional map on the EOS website.

It had been a total success. EOS is certainly spreading the word and the severity of Eosinophilic diseases.

I was flabbergasted by the number of healthcare professionals who came onto the stand who said they had a child or partner or even personally had all the symptoms of EoE and asked for information.

Over my four days helping Amanda, I learned that this is exhausting but essential work. I saw how it takes a ridiculous amount of time to put all the information together, to update the social media, I could go on and on.

The charity is now supporting nearly 1000 community and healthcare professional members.

Fundraising is essential for Amanda to be able to continue her amazing work of spreading the word to Doctors, supporting sufferers and growing this incredible charity.
